Programs

In addition to the general curriculum, our school offers many additional opportunities for our students and school community, such as:

Early Learning Programs:

Deroche StrongStart

Our StrongStart Program provides an opportunity for families to participate in early learning activities with their child in a school setting.  Parents and caregivers with children from birth to age 5 can attend our StrongStart Program at no cost.  We offer a place to play and interact with your child in a warm and supportive learning environment.  Our program runs every Mon/Wed/Fri from 8:30-11:30 on school days.

Our StrongStart Program provides ……

Ready, Set, Learn (RSL) Program

Our Ready, Set, Learn Program is an Early Learning initiate sponsored by the Ministry of Education.  Our school offers two main RSL events throughout the school year.  These events are geared for families with children 3-5 years of age with the goal of developing positive connections with our school community.  Our first event takes place in November and includes storytime, crafts and activities, with special guest speakers.  Our second event takes place in April and includes a spaghetti dinner, literacy stations and interactive activities as well as information sessions for parents.  Watch for specific RSL dates listed on our “calendars of events” home page.

Literacy Support Programs:

At Deroche, we want to see every child succeed and offer a range of programs to help with literacy support, including ……

Sports/Health & Wellness Programs:

We are a health and wellness promoting school and have created an environment that supports healthy choices for our students with a focus on:

We want our students to develop an appreciation for athletics, healthy living, physical activity and lifelong wellness in order to enhance their academic success.  There is a known connection between good nutrition, physical activities and being better learners.  Our school participates in the following programs to help support our healthy living goals  …..

Aboriginal Cultural Programs:

We are proud to offer a variety of Aboriginal Programs to all of our students at Deroche.  We provide many opportunities to participate in activities, such as soapstone carving, weaving, beading, directed drawing, bannock, Metis jigging, drumming and song.  Our school embraces Aboriginal traditions and we welcome many cultural presenters and Elders to our school throughout the year.  Students look forward to our ‘Salmon in the Classroom’ Program where they learn about the life cycle of the salmon, and also enjoy our ‘First Salmon Ceremony’ led by Johnny Williams in May.  We are also pleased to offer all of our students the opportunity to learn Halq’emeylem led by Peter (Pipte) Lindley from our Aboriginal Department.
